M-Audio Oxygen Pro Getting Started

Here’s how to setup and install M-Audio Oxygen Pro with FL Studio.

First, my FREE Oxygen Pro MIDI Script fixes the transport buttons..

The Premium Oxygen Pro FL Studio Template is not required, but gives a better experience and comes with two versions:

  • Version 1 is normal operation for Drum Pads, Knobs, and Sliders. (Orange Color)
  • Version 2 is powerful hands-on workflow using Oxygen Pro Drum Pads (Lots of Colors)

M-Audio Oxygen Pro REVIEW

If you are unsure if this is the right MIDI Keyboard for you, here’s my M-Audio Oxygen Pro FL Studio Review. Or, keep reading for the Oxygen Pro Setup Guide.

Step 1: Oxygen Pro MIDI Script

The M-Audio Oxygen Pro MIDI Script is free, and ensures the Transport Buttons work normally.

First, Download Oxygen Pro MIDI Script.

Next, Install Oxygen Pro MIDI Script in FL Studio.

There’s both a FREE and PAID MIDI Script for the Oxygen Pro.

The Free Oxygen Pro MIDI Script gets installed on MIDIIN3.

The Paid Oxygen Pro MIDI Script gets installed on Oxygen Pro 49.

The purpose of the Free Oxygen Pro MIDI Script is that the M-Audio Oxygen Pro MIDI Keyboard’s LOOP button out of the box did not switch between Song and Pattern Mode in FL Studio, so this simple MIDI Script fixes that.

The paid MIDI Script comes with two versions.. Version 1 sets up all the stuff below so you don’t have to figure any thing out. Version 2 offers a very cool hands-on FL Studio experience off the drum pads.

This is how I’ve known default operation of a MIDI Keyboard in FL Studio:

  • PLAY = PLAY (If No Audio Playing, it Plays. If Audio Playing, it Pauses)
  • STOP = STOP (1 Press Stops, 2 Presses Resets)
  • LOOP BUTTON = Change Between Song / Pattern Mode
  • RECORD = Enabled / Disable Record
  • FORWARD = Goes 1 Bar Forward
  • BACK = Goes 1 Bar Back

Step 2: PRESET vs. DAW Mode

Hold DAW button, and select “FL ST.” (Use “PUSH TO ENTER” knob to save!)

Then, then press PRESET MODE.

Make sure to always use PRESET MODE with the M-Audio Oxygen Pro in FL Studio.

DAW Mode is very buggy, and gives a bad FL Studio experience.

Step 3: Set TEMPO SYNC to EXTERNAL

Make sure to set TEMPO SYNC to EXTERNAL.

INTERAL is why the Transport Buttons don’t work good in FL Studio.

My Premium Oxygen Pro Template sets this up for you.

There’s two ways to set Oxygen Pro Tempo Sync Mode:

  1. Hold TEMPO SYNC button on Oxygen Pro MIDI Keyboard, use the Knob to select EXTERNAL, then push down “PUSH TO ENTER” knob to save.
  2. Install free M-Audio Oxygen Pro Preset Editor, set TEMPO SYNC to EXTERNAL in the software, then File -> Send Preset, then overwrite a preset.

I think with Option #1, you have to do this each time you turn off/on the Oxygen Pro.

Step 4: Oxygen Pro Setup Complete!

If you’re only using my FREE Oxygen Pro MIDI Script, that’s it!

You downloaded and installed the MIDI Script, and enabled the MIDI Keyboard.

To troubleshoot, look in the top left of FL Studio. There should be an orange knob appear when you pressing keys or moving sliders/knobs showing you activity!

M-Audio Oxygen Pro User Preset for FL Studio

Premium Oxygen Pro User Preset is different than free Oxygen Pro MIDI Script.

Premium Preset (which is a Premium MIDI Script), gets installed the same way, but instead of on MIDIIN3, gets installed on the Oxygen Pro itself in FL Studio Settings. Premium User Preset offers two versions:

  • Version 1 sets up your knobs and sliders over the 4 banks, gives each bank a unique color, and fixes the EXTERNAL Tempo sync (easy fix)
  • Version 2 gives a very powerful FL Studio workflow based off the drum pads.. it’s intuitive and I’m always tweaking it for my own workflow.

V2 was a huge update for a very powerful workflow.

Does the M-Audio Oxygen Have Bad Reviews?

At first, things were buggy in FL Studio, and setup was hard.

The main Oxygen Pro bugs were:

  • Transport Buttons Intermittent
  • M-Audio Oxygen Pro Pitch Wheel Not Working

After many hours of tinkering, the transport button issue is completely solved.

There is a fix for the pitch wheel, but it seems people still have problems now and then.. I personally do not use the Pitch and Mod wheel in my beatmaking workflow, but I have a video below on how to fix pitch wheel in FL Studio.

My Current Issues with M-Audio Oxygen Pro

My experience with Oxygen Pro MIDI Keyboard has been quite good.

After about 2 years of use, some sliders and knobs sometimes randomly output signal, causing FL Studio Hint Panel to show activity.

I have seen reports of this from a few posts, but doesn’t seem super common at this time.

Additionally, the warranty is something I did not mention in my review.. M-Audio only offers 1 year warranty on the Oxygen Pro, which I think is very low.. I’d really like a minimum of 3 years from these companies..

So far, this hasn’t affected my beatmaking experience, but does show signs of lower-end components in the M-Audio Oxygen Pro starting to fail over time.

Best Oxygen Pro Setup in FL Studio

I want to quickly discuss what a “good midi keyboard” means.

Understand a MIDI Keyboard has no sounds in it.. so a cheap vs. expensive MIDI Keyboard are the same same for melodies!

What matters is how well a MIDI Keyboard works with your DAW!

Even expensive MIDI Keyboards may not work well with your DAW!

In short, the difference between cheap and expensive MIDI Keyboards is often their build quality, extra components like knobs, sliders, drum pads, and features such as auto-chord mode, arpeggio mode, and similar things..

Be careful of MIDI Keyboards that lock you into their eco-system.. it looks appealing, but it’s better to be able to switch hardware any time you’d like!
