Heritage Audio – Baby RAM [UNBOXING]

You may want to watch my SSL2+ Audio Interface Unboxing, which explains the reason I purchased this monitor controller.
This video shares my Heritage Audio Baby RAM Unboxing.
Heritage Audio Baby RAM
A monitor controller is crucial when you want to switch between two sets of speakers.
If you’ve ever done research for a monitor controller, you’ve probably seen how expensive they can get..
I decided to separate my audio interface & monitor controller this time, which allowed for higher-quality gear for each individual product, plus if one unit fails, I can easily replace it 👍
My previous audio interface was an all-in-one audio interface and monitor controller (Mackie BIG KNOB STUDIO). It was a good affordable solution, but I wanted an upgrade.
My First Impressions:
First, the Baby RAM is a PASSIVE Monitor Controller, meaning you don’t plug in power, just your audio cables.

It has one single volume knob for both speakers, which I’m not a huge fan of, as Mackie also makes a passive monitor controller like this, too.
You need to adjust all speakers so they are a similar volume when switching banks. This can be inconvenient if your speakers are hard to get to, plus testing.
Solution: If Heritage Audio gave independent volume for each bank, PLUS the global knob (once the volumes are set).
My problem was my Avantone MixCube was not able to achieve the same loudness as my Reference Monitor Speakers.. so I had to turn down my main speakers & subwoofer to compensate for Bank B’s low volume output.
Alternatively, you can purchase a higher-end active monitor controller, but that defeats the purpose of an “affordable monitor controller”, which this Baby RAM gives.. if it allowed us to passively turn down Bank A and Bank B volumes, then we could have used the global volume to use the monitor controller without having to adjust each speaker’s volume, which is very tedious.
Build Quality:
The build quality feels great. The global volume knob has a really cool analog click, and switching banks is really fast as when you push one bank, it releases the other 👍
It also has the MONO, MUTE and DIM, which are essential in a monitor controller to hear mono.
Overall I seem to be happy so far, but at the time of writing, I only had a couple days to play with it from the unboxing video to writing this article.
Anyways, just wanted to keep members updated on the music equipment I’m using.
