I tend to have the problem of wanting to get lost looking for samples or going through synthesizer presets, ad nauseum? How do you keep from going down that rabbit hole? Or is this a normal part of the process for you?

Also, I noticed in the video you were quick about picking sounds with your fast workflow.

I spend more time looking than creating. Haha

Any advice?

Hey William, hope you’re doing well in the platform.

No, deciding on samples and presets is something you want to train your ear for.  It all comes down to wise sound selection, which I talk a bit about in SAFE SPOTS (when you get there).

Also, having high-quality drum samples and beatmaking VSTi presets really allows you to select sounds faster, because they work easier.  If dealing with low-quality sounds, or sounds not meant for beatmaking, you will find yourself struggling to get something to work, which will also require more mixing processing (EQing and Compressing, etc).

I’d try practicing more drum loops, and trying to make quick melodies over them.  Then you can move onto trying to complete a beat later on, once you get the basics down!

Keep it simple and to the point..

It’s very easy to think you need many plugins and sounds..

The SAFE SPOTS Course and Book explains WHY I keep a small amount of sounds around (for easy backup purposes, and easy to manage).
