Creating EDM - House, Trap, Techno

AnsweredClosed

Do you have any advice on creating EDM beats. Kids love it. DJ’s are great at creating it. I know that there is not much to lyrics in them other than repeated vocals spread out through the song or they don’t have lyrics at all. I love all music, this genre is growing and it growing in me as well.

I don't have a particular genre I like when making beats.. so just know when I teach beatmaking it's all about finding your own sound.. whether that be a dance beat or an emotional rap beat.

For some tips about getting started with EDM:

  • EDM is usually a faster tempo (like 128-140BPM)
  • EDM usually uses a lot of sidechain compression based off the kick drum ducking volume of other instruments
  • There's LOTS of different styles of EDM (as your title says)

Back when I was learning FL Studio, dubstep was a huge genre.. and used a lot of LFO filters for that "wobble sounds in beats"..

This is why I always advise students to find their own sound and style of beats, because when the trends change in the music production industry, you either have to learn making beats in that specific genre again (which is actually very hard), or you fade out really fast and hard..

Do you have any specific questions about EDM?  That covers that basic stuff pretty much..

in Nexus, when I use the controller keys, when I choose sequencer, on the left side of the keyboard it literally plays drums a programmed music and then on the right it’s just normal sounds.

Yeah I try to avoid those types of presets.  Those are only CERTAIN presets in Nexus..

They are often identified by:

  • SQ
  • DL
  • (or if they have a BPM identified)

If you use other presets like leads, pianos, guitars, bass, pads, etc.. you'll be able to play melodies with your MIDI Keyboard with both hands (all the keys).

If you purchase third-party expansions for reFX Nexus, be careful you only buy packs with not many SQ or DL presets, as I don't find those very useable (and I don't like the pre-made drum loops because I always teach custom beatmaking here at itsGratuiTous.com!)
